Since the 1950s, pop music melodies have become simpler, less complex.

This has been interpreted as, older songs are better.

Wrong.

Perhaps listeners like to tap their feet while listening. Or even sing along. In which case simpler songs --modern songs -- are better.

First, define good and bad. And then place a value judgement on the data.
