being a parent

two points of disagreement with Andrew Miller ,1st July

1. His 5y.o daughter had a nightmare. he comforts her with what he admits is a lie, that daddy will always be there for her.
There is no question of, as he writes, broaching issues of mortality in the middle of the night. It's much simpler:
the child wants comfort, company, *now* Not crap promises that the next business trip will prove to be lies.

2. he goes on to worry about a future time when he will *not* be needed in the middle of the night.
Well, idiot, that's when you can step back and be proud that you have raised an independent human being. Sad for yourself -- but proud.
Not proud of what you have done. But proud of the child that is the result.
