not listening

an ED nurse in Albany worked three shifts in a row. 29.5 hours within a 40 hour period. This is ridiculous. Especially in a job where lives are at risk.

There was, apparently, miscommunication between day and night managers.
The nurse must have known that she, or he, was being called on to work extremely long hours.
There are calls for "fatigue management".
How about this:
Improve communication between managers.
And listen to nurses.
Actively listen.

Ask the nurse, Are you ready for another shift? Listen to the answer.
And, even if the nurse is not asked... be prepared to listen for nurse comments.
Sure, a nurse is at the bottom of the hierarchy.
But they also know what is actually happening--where the work is being done.
Encourage two way communication. And listen.

Walk and talk. and listen.
