Nice. of course

It's the time of year when the comics make a lot of jokes about kids being naughty or nice. All very funny :-)

An article in The West destroys any possible fun.

Parents are now expected to put up a spy doll. A "shelf elf"

The child is told that the elf is spying and reporting.
How absolutely horrible :-(

Worse: the parent is expected to move the elf every day.
Spying from anywhere. Neither parent nor child is allowed to relax.

And the elf must be accessoried -- more than just dressed up. At extra, daily, expense. Accessoried with worthless elf junk which then goes into the bin... landfill.

The spy elf will also have a microphone.

Every childish joke will be recorded.
And... you can bet
... sent to China, for more marketing.

Not just the children's words: Every word in the household will generate tailored, sponsored, targetted marketing.

An absolutely sick "toy" :-(

A solid, sordid, exercise in marketing.

Thank goodness for the childrens' page in the local Community Post newspaper.

The headline is simple:

You have all been very nice :-)
Hi kids!

dullsville

perth has been Dullsville for 25 years.
that would by why so many people have moved to perth... looking for a peaceful, pleasant , safe place to live.

now basil z is pleased to announce that perth is a vibrant family friendly -- over-crowded -- city.

perhaps all those eastern staters will return home. to continue their work of converting melbourne etc to concrete and steel ghettos.

and leave perth to be a quiet, peaceful, safe -- dull -- place for the rest of us to live and enjoy.

teacher burnout

public school teachers are quitting in droves.
burnt out, reportedly, by the increasingly complex needs of students.

let's be honest:
the real problem is the increasingly complex *demands* of students. and of their parents.

my little johnny is not a mindless trouble-maker...
he is neuro-diverse. therefore every teacher must prepare a unique lesson plan for little johnny. So that he may adequately deal with his socially-induced urge to stick knives ito other students.

WA small business

today The West Editoral looks at small rather than large business.
as usual the suggestion is that the government should throw money at business. in this case, reduce payroll tax.
i imagine the tax itself is not the worst problem.

consider a sandwich shop:
... an hour satisfying health regs.
two hours on paperwork, to prove that all regs were satisfied.

leaving half an hour to make an actual sandwich.

simplify the calculation of payroll tax. so the amount owing is... quickly... known to the business.
then it can ... easily ... be included in the cost of doing business. rather than an extra burden of paperwork at the end of an already busy work day.
allow the business owner to run the actual business
teher than providing paperwork for govt.

apart from that
.... yes!
... support WA small business as much as possible,
it does more for WA than all the major miners combined

rotto rioters

Elliot Brill, Letters, suggests a delay to drivers licences for under-age students who riot on Rotto.
Instead, they each get a free trip home.

It would make more sense to leave the children where they are.
Let them wait on the Rotto jetty until their parents arrive to take them home. At the parents' expense.

Act of War

Fire-bombing Australian citizens on Australian soil
is not a crime.

It is an act of war.

the enemy "soldiers" were not in uniform therefore they need to to be shot dead on sight.

They are not criminals... These are enemies of Australia in an undeclared war. They have committed an act of war against Australians in Australia.

Act of War

An enemy of Australia has attacked Australian citizens on Australian soil.
This is an act of war.

Yes. the firebombing of an Australian synagogue.

Hate crime? bull.

terrorism, no.

Enemy soldiers have attacked Australians in Australia.

We are now at war.

Who are the enemy?

We may never know. Other than anonymous cowards. As in any war -- soldiers not in uniform are shot on sight, as spies.

What we can guess, at least, is that our enemy is anti-Israel.

In general, my sympathies are vaguely anti-israel.
They use ancient self-written religious texts to justify gradual expansion and regular killing ofanyone who is not Israeli.

But what they do in their own part of the world is their own concern.
I may object, be disgusted but, if they want to be vicious barbarians, that is who, what they are. I have no right to interfere in their internal wars of extermination.

Now an enemy of Israel -- that seems to be who is involved -- an enemy of Israel has brought war to Australia.

We don't have to be friends of Israel.

Now, however
... we are definitely enemies of at least one enemy of Israel.
An enemy of secretive cowards.

No, we can't declare our own war on this enemy of Australia.

What we can do is to support Israel. Not with a war of revenge. Not while our enemy is unidentified.

yes, the firebombing was an act of war.
An attack on Australians on our own soil.

We are now at war with an undeclared enemy.

we cannot attack the hidden enemy on suspicion.

we can provide support --short of actual war  -- to the country whose enemies are now, also, the enemies of Australia.

sculptures by the sea

it costs a lot to run our annual Sculptures by the Sea.
No-one want to pay for it.

the sculptures travel round the world.
as do the artists, who have to decide where to hang the sheets of plastic, or stick the bamboo sticks in the sand.

i have a lot of sympathy for the letter writer who thinks it's not art, just rubbish.

deb and i like to go -- largely to have a laugh.

this year there is no federal arts funding.

no surprise, by the time the exhibits get to WA they have already been displayed at Bondi. why pay to ship them even further.

Now it gets ridiculous:

our Philistine Premier is desperate to get votes.
He convices the PM to fly to WA... and to sponsor the sculptures.

here's a better idea:

the PM stays in canberra.

send a cardboard cut-out for the photo ops.

save the cost of the PM's air fare
... use that money to sponsor
... half a dozen Sculptures by the Sea by *local* WA artists.

eg Sculptures by the Bay , Dunsborough, I think it is.
Or the display of recycled sculptures which ran in Rockingham. And was far more memorable than that year's "by the Sea"

But no. If Bondi has it, WA must follow suit.
Even though no-one in WA in interested in sponsoring.

We should support WA artists.
support WA exhibitions
Leave the PM to buy his own votes in Bondi.

more money for mining mates

wannabe lithium miners have their hands out, demanding government -- our -- cash.

oh dear, they say, give us money or we will go away.

no one wants their lithium.
why should government support a failing industry.

(yes, okay, we all know -- government support is in exchange for future board positions and other bribes.

let's, for now, pretend ignorance and look at the recent past.

the state Labor govt gave a billion to a lithium miner.
in exchange, the miner dug giant holes and employed a few hundred apprentices.

then the miner closed up shop.

sacked every apprentice.

left the state.
left the giant holes.

probably took away their... our... billion dollars.

certainly no intention of returning it.

thegoverment gives money to its rich mining mates.
with zero -- or negative -- return.

are politicians idiots?

i go with the more obvious explanation:

politicians are criminals who are quite happy to accept bribes.

tell History and Heal

It is time for Australians to drop the phrase "truth telling".
It is both racist and offensive.

Yes, we all understand that Blak people were "there" and that their memories are still painful.

Yet "Truth telling" is used to tell the world that the *only* truth -- of our shared Australian history -- is the spoken memories of Blak people.

The obvious corollary is that any words spoken by Whyt people must be lies.

Are the Whyt written records also lies?

What about photographs taken by contemporary Whyt people?
Are they also Whyt lies?

The phrase "truth telling" is both racist and offensive.

What it does is to drive a wedge between Blak and Whyt Australians.

When we refer to "history telling" --then we can build a true picture of our shared Australian history.
A history shared by Blak and Whyt.
Yes, the truth may be ugly. It may be painful.

"truth telling" is deliberately one-sided and racist.

"history telling" allows for the complete story to be told.

This may allow healing -- possibly even understanding.

Then we can move forward. As one country.

If that is what we want.

who else to blame

home schooling notoriously attracts the weird.
or, to be polite, the people who do not fit comfortably within the standard parameters of people at school.

it may be the weird kid or the weird parents... or both.

home schooling then isolates them... from the more normal school environment.

the skinny ballerina had years of home schooling.

the education department provided support. for education.

should those teachers also provide psychological counselling? child welfare reports? perhaps direct police reporting?
no way. their job is education. that is their training

just a few moths bck a school teacher dared to put a school kid on the scales. he was above average weight, the teacher reported.

the parent -- not even a weird home school supporter -- went nasty and abusive. How dare you say that my little johnny is fat, she screamed.
and that was a "normal" parent.

no.

let the teachers teach.

if we want full social and psychological counselling -- employ people who are trained for it. and pay them for it.
and when that fails to save the skinny ballerina.

find a Big Brother solution that does work.

Wattle, Odette Brown

Wattle, by
Odette Brown

short story

and that is the end of that

Last year I wrote stories for the daily paper's short story competition.
no expectation of winning, perhaps a wild hope of being noticed.

i deliberately wrote stories that *I* would enjoy reading.

Today i read a"yarn" winner. the author complains about the difficulty of a writer gaining recognition, or publication. so far so good, i can agree.
now i can also understand.

here's a comparison:

Another winning yarn is about an old woman, the author's granmother, smoking and dying and complaining in lonely misery.

there's a Jack Reacher book that begins with a teenager's mother dying of terminal something. the mother is a drunken, lonely, alcoholic drug addict.

the jack reacher book then develops as expected. with several "nice" people dying unpleasantly and fifty or more nasty people dying very ... satisfactorily.

but here's the thing:

in that one introductory death of mother, the jack reacher book packs in more ... positive affirmation... mother-child love and loyalty
... more hope... than in the yarn which dedicates itself to just one death.

truth to tell
... the yarn mother may not even have died.
the story was so "meaningful"
... so packed with "significance?"
... that I may have misunderstood.

not to worry. it's in the bin now.
and next year i shall write stories for my own enjoyment.
with no "yarns"

Oh, and btw:

I tried to use the Google Blogger app to update the original post.
By the time I had successfully (I hope) updated -- the app had deleted, discarded, drafted, lost... the original post.

cash and teal

Spending limits could "kill off teals (21 nov 24)
No great loss there.

Okay, Labor have a great fear of electoral opposition.
As soon as McGowan gained power in WA he passed laws which made it very difficult for out-of-Metro electorates to get anyone into parliament.
So, no surprise that Albo fears, and acts against, "teals"

But who are these teals that anyone should worry?

First, they call themselves "independents". They are not.
Then they, teals, act almost as though they are a political party with a shared power.
They are not.

Most of the teals are sponsored by one very rich man. Who is he? What are his political views? We are not told.
He pays the money as "Climate 200" -- a "climate action group.
We do know that Climate200 grew out of an almost identical group, something200.
All we know of that first group is that it threw out the Climate200 founder
... so we have two billionaires fighting for power... not a good basis for any group with acceptable aims.
So the prime -- only? -- teal sponsor is a man with allegiance only to himself.

But, when he -- as the one and only teal sponsor tells a teal "independent" what to do, will they obey?

Of course they will.

They will obey this one man -- a man with unknown ideas, unexplained ideologies -- obey or lose all funding.

These teals are not "independent".

They act as if they are almost a political party.

Yet they have no party members.

aside: The Legalise Cannabis Australia party has party members. Enough to be registered as a real political party.
It's not always easy but LCA has at least done the hard yards.

The teals have no party members.
No party rules.
No platform, no policy. Nothing.

Teal politicians are a bunch of power-grubbers who take almost anonymous money -- in order to bolster their own power.
What do they really want?
Cross-bench power is all that they will admit to.

The sooner these frauds are removed from parliament -- the better.

Rio Stinko

Rio Tinto has a serious "cultural" problem.
an established culture of bullying and sexual harrassment of the few female staff in the largely male workforce.

Bullying and harassment are serious society-wide problems, well beyond the ability of one organisation to correct.
so Rio takes the easy approach. Bows to the woke brigade and says, we will balance the numbers of male and female managers.

this position, they say, is set aside for a woman. But I am an equally qualified, experienced, skilled male. too bad, this job will never be yours.

Rio pretend surprise but, it's okay, they are able to tick the task as, done.
sure, workplace bullying continues. sexual harrassment continues. workplace morale is lowered but
... one woke box is ticked.
well done, Rio.

Perhaps Kelsie Prabawa-Sear of Nature Play WA can apply the Rio non-solution to the non-problem of children's playgrounds.

Kelsie has attended conferences where other people have counted boys and girls playing physical games which they seem to enjoy.
How dare they enjoy!
Kelsie has no interest in asking girls if they are at all interested in, for example, skate parks and pump tracks.
in the Kelsie world, individual preferences are not relevant.

kelsie is ready for the Rio response:

Gather fifty girls. Mixed ethnicity, mixed ability, interest is not relevant.
force them to attend a pump track. Force them to skate and to pump (no, I have no idea, either).

Count the numbers, present a paper at a woke conference in an exotic overseas holiday resort. Gain more academic publication points. Well done Kelsie.

Or, here's my suggestion:

suggest that children go outside and play in the park.
With their friends, boys and girls. Perhaps even meet and make new friends.

with the 5% of women watching, another source of Kelsie hatred, well, they can be parents. Acting, as parents do, as parents. Supervising and just, keeping an eye on their children.

that is my advice.

if Kelsie will forward her contact details, my invoice for consultation will be sent.

Vanilla then cinnamon,
by Anson Cameron,
Okay, not too bad :-)

The story is good, with a satisfying ending. Well written.
... deserves to be Overall winner. And depressing enough that I will not bother to read any more "yarn" entries.
Really... I prefer to *enjoy* what I read.
####

earlier: Is this correct:

The much-hyped long-listed "yarn" by an established author is to be permanently hidden behind the requirement for a "min $32" online subscription?
(No. The story is printed in the Sunday paper, so that's okay)

Readers who only pay for a daily paper will never know what hints he used to let his friends on the "independent" panel of judges know who he is.
Perhaps a passing reference to his great grandad Joseph Furphy?

What other furphies are carefully hidden behind the interests of online marketing?

For example. We will never discover how he was able to bypass the stated requirements for narrative structure.

He is proud to say that he cannot be bothered to think of either a start or a finish.
What else if carefully hidden?

Makes. You wonder, doesn't it.

Aus yarn competition.

I submitted several short stories to the short story competition I The West.
No, I did not expect to win. ( though a well done mention would have been terrific :-)
But no surprise when the top 50 list was published with no mention of me

Today, The West published one of their "better" entries.
Now I feel a whole lot better.

The published story is... crap.

Stereotype overlaid on cliche.
Woke mysticism with pointless violence. Ben Elton Muppet structure: not sure what to do so... blow everyone up.
My own stories are mild.

Nonsense. Designed to elicit a smile, perhaps.
Logical constructs within their own illogical worlds.
Providing, perhaps, a light message of the potential down side of unthinking development.

That's what I try for, anyway :-)

My own stories would be embarrassed to stand with the rubbish that, today, was presented as being a "good" short story.

In such awful company... I am pleased to go unnoticed.

Barely a ripple of a rort

Paul Murray need not be too concerned about Labor electoral staff campaigning with taxpayers' money. This is a very minor issue.

For example: The year 2024 offered several major opportunities for Tourism in WA.

The Huge World Tourism and Trade conference WTTC24 was held in WA. A golden opportunity to present WA to the world as a unique and exciting tourism destination.

TourismWA began the development of a brand new phone app -- specifically designed to promote tourism in Western Australia.
Another ideal opportunity to make a grand impression at WTTC24.

On a smaller more personal note, I began discussions with a tourism political advisor. I would guess that he fell into the category of "electoral staff".

As it turned out, the man had no skills.
He was unable or reluctant to read emails.
He failed to grasp the concept that communication is better when it is two-way.

After six wasted months he was barely able to drag himself back to the question which I had raised in my very first email.

Worse: he had a terrible fear of being in the same room as a new -- possibly unique -- idea.

Had this man read the note about, You are always campaigning? If so, he was a very sad failure.

At the end of six months,
This electoral officer had campaigned for  nothing.
There was no sign of a new TourismWA app.

WTTC24 had come and gone with barely a whimper.
My own offer, opportunity, had been killed by advisor stupidity.

Three unique -WA- tourism opportunities were

 dead.

If this was Labor campaigning
... then nothing at all was lost to electoral office duties.

This electoral officer was a Ministerial Advisor Tourism.

The only loss of benefit was to Saffiotti.

If this man is the best available
... no amount of rorting will provide any actual benefit to Labor.
Nor, unfortunately, to Tourism in Western Australia.

Dangers with disinformation

Today's editorial is correct: a bill to ban disinformation is dangerous.

Disinformation is impossible to define.
It depends on... the point of view.

Does the proposed Bill even mention, Truth?

Probably not. Truth is equally difficult to define.

And yet...
Wikipedia, somehow, manages to present "truth".

At least,
Wikipedia presents information which is ... accepted... as being Truth.

Okay, they work in areas where facts may exist.

Perhaps...
Perhaps Australia can provide a "fact-checked database of rumours, claims, conspiracies...

For example:

I know that the Moon is made of cheese.
It must be true...
I saw that Wallace and Gromit have been there and have eaten the Moon cheese.
This would be Followed by a Wikipedia-style... analysed, argued, finally accepted... explanation of Wallace and Gromit. And why their "truth" may be less than true.

Who knows, this may weaken the dangers of some of the wilder conspiracies.

State election date

The date of next WA state election is already known. March 8th 2025? I think (well, I should know it, but... :-)

The date is set by legislation.

The date is set, already, by long-established legislation.

It is not a political football to be changed at the whim of a pollie.

And yet...
There are always ways to override a law.

If the Federal government wants to change, to override, an existing state law, it's easy enough...

Make an appeal to a suitable court.

The High Court seems happy enough to ride roughshod over existing laws. To allow criminals free access to Australia, for example.

All Albo needs is a loophole, a well-paid lawyer and an appeal to the high court.... and our election date will be changed.

Openly. Honestly, legally.

Meanwhile... the date is set. By law.

Housing

... young people are unable to get into the wealth-creating housing market...
The wealth- creating housing market? Says it all, doesn't it.

No wonder people have difficulty finding somewhere to live.

When I am in power...
We will talk about entering the housing market... in order to find somewhere to live.

Nothing to stop you making a profit from owning housing.
But... neither will there be anything with the intention of increasing your profit.

Housing is for living... shelter, security... a roof over our heads.

Realpolitick

It's  great news that Premier Cook is willing to do the job for which he will be well paid.
He is willing to spend millions in order to speed up the approvals process for major projects.

Not the evaluation process but, straight to approvals.
Cook will not waste time with our pointless democratic processes.
There will be no question of what is wanted by electors.
No nonsense about, would anyone prefer to preserve any natural environment?
No.

If CCIWA members want to dig an enormous hole in our state -- it will be approved.

No doubt, behind the scenes, CCIWA members will be returning the favour. With paid-for votes and future sinecures.

Thank you, Cook, for getting on with the money-making  work of realpolitick

Not reading for pleasure

12nov24: Printed in The West

On Sunday, Kate Emery is worried that less children (and less adults) are reading for pleasure.

A few years ago, The Road by Cormac McCarthy was added to school curricula as a compulsory text.
There is no way that any decent human being could read The Road for pleasure.

And yet "we" forced our children to read it.

"We" clearly did not want children to enjoy the reading.

So "we" forced
our children to read a book with no possibility of reading for pleasure.

For whatever reasons, "we" have done our best to remove the pleasure from reading.

And now "we" have succeeded.

Congratulations.

Ya gotta laugh

A plane loses an engine.
Lands safely, in Brisbane, but...
It's big news.
By luck the ABC has one of its reporters on board that plane. The reporter is able to provide a first-hand account of the story. The fear. The fire. The bangs as... something nasty happens inside the failing engine.

But hang on a sec.

That ABC Reporter is Mike Willacy.

Isn't he the reporter who hears... or imagines he  hears,
Bangs from gunship helicopters in Afghanistan...

Does the man have a serious hearing problem?

Coincidence?
Ya gotta laugh

non-diplomatic Rudd

Very entertaining, possibly honest, views of Rudd as a diplomat.

I look back to my own personal ranting blog. On 20dec22 I post:

I had not realised. Albanese hates Americans. but now it is obvious.

he has sent Rudd to be Australia's ambassador to the U.S.

those poor Americans.

===

So now what?

Drag Rudd home by the short and curlies.
Send a real Ambassador. One who has actual training or experience.
Or an Ambassador who at least understands the meaning of "diplomacy".

Closed to communication

Howard Snow is correct. There is no need for an engineer to speak... nor to understand ...  English.

From my own brief attempt at Engineering I remember the poster, popular amongst engineering students:

Six munce ago I cooden even spell injineer.

The fed opposition describes "the high court loss as embarrassing". And demands that the government act immediately.

Says it all, doesn't it.

Pollies are not interested in law and order.
They have no interest in the safety of Australian citizens.

The pollie priority is...
What can we do to ... score political points... or to embarrass... some other pollie.

trump landslide

The front page tells us that Trump has made "the greatest comeback in political history".
Please note the word "political".

Trump did it -- this time -- with no attempt at armed insurrection.
No use of weapons of war.
Trump won a victory through the US ballot box: the centrepiece of democracy within the US.
Just as the Australian ballot box is the centre of our own style of, Australian democracy.

We now have the freedom -- the democratic right -- to welcome -- or fear -- the result.

That's democracy.
A lot of challenge -- but still a good option.

Bit coin confusion

The headline reads,

Bit coin hits record high on friendlier regulation.

And I thought the whole point of bitcoin is...
Investment which is free of all that stifling regulation.
Let the mrket govern itself, all that good stuff... freedom from government, etc, manipulation, control, restriction... etc , again... :-)

Shows how little I know.
Oh well, put that monopoly money back under the mattress :-)

I hope I was dreaming

I hope that I was dreaming when I heard, or, I hope, mis-heard, this snippet of news:

WA has a billionaire miner. Yes, another.
This one has been found to have acted... without regard for ethics. Yes, another.

What I think I heard:

The unethical billionaire donated $9,000 to the WA Labor party. Well, why not. That's how any billionaire buys political favours A very cheap price, too.

And yet... in light of today's news...
with various individuals and organisations rushing to distance themselves from the now *in* famous billionaire -- and his money and his possibly-corrupting influence...
Our Premier is asked, Will you return that "tainted" money?

I mean, How stupid can Premier Cook possibly be?
Of course he -- or the Labor Party -- will return the money.
No-one... no one honest... wants to be associated with "tainted" money.
I mean, mud sticks.

But No.

Premier Cook says,
No, we will not return that $9,000.
What?!

Surely I imagined that? I hope so.

Remember Blazing Saddles? The list of thugs, crooks, criminals, etc who are required to attack Rock Ridge?

Will Premier Cook take dirty, stolen, tainted money from any or all of those criminals?
Of course he will. Why not?
Money -- to Cook -- is money. His money now.

So Premier Cook will keep the tainted money.
And be forever associated with its tainted source.

Just how stupid is Premier Cook?

Just hand back the money. With a polite apology, perhaps. In light of the current news, we can't... etc etc.
Back away. Now.

Or forever be the WA Premier who will take money... is that "gift" a bribe? From anyone, Is that person a real criminal? Where did they get their money ?

etc etc etc...

I hope that I was imagining that half-heard snippet of news.

Trump wins

In hindsight...
This is why Trump won:

Americans are sick and tired of being told that they must put everyone else first.

Immigration: so a million people want to walk out of Mexico and -- against all laws -- those people "must" be allowed to walk into the US.
Why?
Because those million people are more important than the existing 500million US citizens. Really?

Imports:
The US "must" allow China to sell cars in the US
Why? So that China can build up its car manufacturing at the expense of manufacturing in the US?
But why.
Because... the people of China are more important than... the millions of current US citizens who earn a living in US car manufacturing. Really?

Trump says, make America great.

Which sounds a lot like...
Put America *first*, again.

I think Americans like that.
I would.

===

And tomorrow...

In Australia:

Let's put Australians first.

Fake ABC

As expected, The West is making a full meal of the ABC's stuff-up on "war crime" reporting from Afghanistan.
This time -- The West is correct.

Sometimes the ABC is Australia's  conscience. Digging into topics which the rest of us ignore, or would rather deny.

This time -- the ABC went out of its way to destroy individual reputations.
Destroy, apparently, for no better reason than to build a saleable story.

Using faked sound effects. So fake that they now admit it was... done for deliberate effect.

An eyewitness who... even at the time... admitted that he saw nothing.
Then repetitious interviews with locals.
Locals who, guess what? Are the enemy.
The reporter expects honest answers from the very people we are there to kill, for be killed by?
Oh, bloody hell.

We -- our people, our government -- send young people to risk their lives, to defend themselves against an enemy who have already demonstrated murderous treachery.
And reporters ask these enemy, Did our own soldiers treat you nicely enough?
Bloody hell.

The West complains of the $400,000 court cost.
I complain about the complete lack of honesty.

The West covers up, hides, ignores, denies its mistakes, its bias. No worries, it's a commercial organisation, there to make a profit.

The ABC claims to be news we can trust.
Then shows that it is perfectly willing to lie... to lie, in support of its own -- or its employees' -- private agendas.

I'd sack the lot of them.
From lying reporter to failing to -manage director.

Then rebuild as an organisation which can be trusted.
Trusted at least to be honest.

"Truth" is variable. A conscience may include bias and misunderstanding.
Outright lies are unacceptable.

Fly high or fail.

Don't we just love our criminals :-)
So he is a "cut-throat dealmaker? I don't care, it's not *my* throat. Not this time, anyway.

He "flew too close to the Sun"

Funny, I always thought that criminals gained heat from flying in the opposite direction.

Then we have a column of his "advisers" who have sucked up... been tsucked up... as close as possible.
Adding a veneer of respectability to the throat cutter.

Sports stars. Politicians. Business leaders.

You can bet that there advice was hedged around with plausible deniability

Perhaps you could do this... not that I would suggest it of course... but you... may want to consider what could happen if...
All the time, hoping to catch some of the golden bounty which drips from the grubby hands of the man with more flexible morals.

And now watch those moral cowards back away...

It happened with the casino enquiry.

Oh, I didn't really know what was happening.
I was paid a heap so I just... turned up and nodded. We were never in a real... business relationship...
Just, well, you know, chaps helping chaps with a bit of highly paid... oh, but never deliberate... image enhancement.

The man built his own business.
Made his own billions
He is fully entitled to use his own property as he sees fit.
Or even use it as far as he sees that he can get away with it.

When he draws in other investors -- includes other people in his dealings. That is when he owes a duty of care... a moral duty... to those other people.

They may all be aware of the lack of moral standards. That may be why they are standing so close to the man... to profit from the actions of the one man who is willing to ignore rules.

The man still owes a duty of care to those uninvolved... so very carefully uninvolved...
People who are now depending on one cut-throat businessman to bring home the gold that they are afraid to grub for, themselves.

And now the poor man is left with nothing.
Well, nothing except the few billions which he will have salted away... somewhere. Somewhere hidden but... very accessible... when he needs it.

Ah well.
If I were ever offered a few million to help a crook to look more honest?

Would I happily accept?
Or would have the courage to at least say...
Just let me think about it.

I would probably accept the benefits.
Rationalise my reasoning.
Take the benefits.
Perhaps within some limits, I've done that, before.
Our criminals offer so many benefits to the rest of us...
Is that enough reason for us to love --and even support -- our criminals?

It's reason enough for most of us.
