drug fuelled

the "sporting" competition " that allows and encourages use of any performance enhancing drugs "ignores decades of medical evidence".
so too does bare-knuckle and cage fighting.which the government pays to operate in WA.

plenty of people find deliberate violence to be entertaining.

some would love to watch Perth coliseum fights to the death. perhaps followed by burning of the losers on a cross.

it entertained the Romans, why not entertain us?

too many lawyers

a review into an enquiry into the death of a child in hospital (sandipan.)

questions are raised: was there bias because the reviewer was friends with the enquirer?

we are far too used to these reviews etc being done, by lawyers: people who will support only the side which pays them.
we are now unable to believe that a person may honestly represent what they believe to be the truth. without being paid for that belief.

crime prevention

coercive control may be the root cause of the Floreat murders. It is only part of the problem.

Ariel Bombara did her best to prevent a crime. She may not have realised just how serious the crime would be. Ariel warned the police. That was the best, the only, action she could take.

and then the police -- by our long-established laws -- were not *allowed* to take any action.

Police can act only when a crime has been committed.
Before crime, police action is severely limited.

we need to give police power to act in prevention of crime. yes, police state, I hear you cry.

we need to give police power to act to prevent crime.power which does not evolve into a police state.

not easy... but necessary.

pedantic or correct?

I like to use exactly the right word or phrase Though I expect that most readers read the meaning and don't care about weak phrasing.

In the paper today an Opinion writer offered his "sincere condolences".

Why the word "sincere"? If the condolences were sincere, why double-up on the sincerity?
If the condolences were *not* sincere, why mention them in the first place?

productivity

the editorialof 20 May
blames anything and everything for a "productivity slump".

a business may take an action, or buy an asset, worth $100. then they do everything possible to spend twice as much on that action or asset. the extra $100 is claimed as a tax deduction.

the government encourages this actual loss of productivity with a discount to payable taxes.

in reality it is extra cost which -- in the arithmetic of accounting -- has doubled cost and halved productivity.

both government and business encourage over-spending -- in the name of gaining tax deductions.
this is why actual productivity continues to "slump".

remove the threat.

Joel Cauchi took weapons to a NSW shopping centre
where he stabbed and killed several people.

Pre-meditated murder.
He was then killed, good. Now there are arguments over, why.

Was he psychotic?
A woman hater?
Drunk or drugged?
Having a bad day?
Who cares: he killed people and now he is dead. Good riddance.

Do we -- society -- really want to live with killers in our midst?

he is(was) . guilty of murder.
If he had survived I would say -- . Now take him out and shoot him.

The "why" is important to help prevent other nutters from becoming killers.
Cauchi has proven that he can -- and has -- killed innocent shoppers Without (or even with) a clear "why" he is a continuing threat.

Now we remove him from society. Quickly and permanently.
Either that or we accept that any one of us could be killed at any time.

No thank you.

political loyalty

the Libs have elected a new party leader.
Voting has barely closed when party members call for the party room to unite behind the new leader.
They do this because political loyalty lasts only until each politician spots a faster opportunity for self-promotion. Even at the expense of party (and leader) betrayal.

Met Gala

The Met Gala in NY raises money for the Met museum's collection of high (and other) historic fashion.

Did I see that this year there is a Perth Fringe Comedy Festival Gala?

Would that be to raise money for storage of ancient humour?
I have a few great jokes which I am willing to donate to the collection

VAD

I'm a supporter of VAD... voluntary assisted dying... but not in the way that it is legislated (in WA).

It is set up so that you *must* be dying ... preferably in pain... before you can choose VAD.

To me, VAD suicide is acceptable. What is *not* acceptable is being forced to kill yourself in secret.

Don't talk to *doctors* ...not only to doctors, anyway about suicide plans: declare it to "next of kin"... or to "emergency contact.

My thinking is to avoid the shock, the horror, of being told that "a loved one" has committed suicide.
Suicide is, in my mind, acceptable. Being forced to do it in secret is truly cruel
... to suicidee and to survivors.

Kids in gaol commit suicide rather that stay in gaol... and rather than return to whatever life lead them to gaol.

If that is the way they feel, allow their "carers a chance for a chat.
Perhaps some problems can be resolved.
And then... if suicide is still the preferred option...
make it an easy VAD.

gender equality

after many years of counting and pressure,  major organisations are finally having equal numbers of men and women in senior positions.

are these numbers based on Donald Trump genders which are decided by genitalia at birth?

or are gender- fluid applicants allowed to determine how they "feel" at time of counting?

open the internet

the government wants to ban teenagers from the internet.
not a hope.

it is not "access" which is the problem.
... it is what is found on the net.

and whatever is found has been put there... by someone.

worse, the awful violence, Porn, etc can all be posted
anonymously.

there are laws against,  for example,  inciting violence.

these laws are useless when we are not able to identify the person who posted and incited.

what we need is a law to ensure that the social media *host* can identify the *real* person who posted something illegal.

anonymity is preserved -- until a post is found to be illegal.
... at that point
the host must identify the poster
... or face the penalties.

show respect

Our Premier clearly does not want anyone to know that he is buying his own private NRL team.

Show the man some respect. Allow him the privacy that he clearly wants.

Never mention the B##rs in your paper.
No mention of games, of results, of players.

See who is first to call chicken.

offensive poster

There's a poster displayed all over SCGH:
it's  okay to ask if I've  cleaned my hands

>>no it's  not!

The poster is encouraging patients to question the professional standards of nurses. encouraging patients to be offensive to the highly trained nurses.

If you have a problem with standards of care: provide a formal feedback mechanism -- to nursing management -- so that your concerns can be dealt with. Without a direct attack on a nurse.

Also on the poster:

your health is in my clean hands

It would be more positive -- and possibly helpful for *some*patients to have:

>>your health is in *our* clean hands !!

olympic politician

Here I was, thinking that Kate Chaney was simply a typical "teal politician." with no platform, no policy, no loyalty except perhaps to her semi-anonymous backers.

Today's paper reports that she is a "serial back-flipper -- in a swing seat --  who could not be trusted".

With those flipping skills, she could be our next Olympics gymnastics champ. Go Kate!
