political leadership

Our politicians are both confused and annoyed by the Monarchy.

Confused?
On the one hand, politicians dedicate one of their number to the task of removing the Monarchy. then these same politicians get very excited at the possibility that a couple of royals may visit Australia.

And annoyed?
There are natural disasters. prime ministers and premiers abandon their deal making to visit the flooded towns. they make vague promises, shake carefully curated hands and get the essential photo ops.
So what do they gain? Demands for actual help. and questions about how seldom they visit these areas. Damn :-(

meanwhile, a Prince makes a phone call. chats to some locals, offers his condolences. and everyone is thrilled.
why?
because the royal did not need to call. he gained nothing. he just showed that he cared.
There is no way a politician can match that.
how annoying.
