jobs or ore

Mark Riley has an opinion on the imminent Federal budget (West, 30 April): It must be all about iron ore rather than jobs.

Forget the recent jobs, jobs and more jobs mantra. Iron ore royalties will raise more than $100 billion. The mantra must be Ore! Ore! Ore!

What he's saying is that jobs are not important. Forget the value of employment. No-one cares about a worker's dignity. A worker's self-sufficiency. A worker's self-worth in providing for themselves.

The real measure of national success is government wealth. More correctly: large corporate income.

Let the workers beg for wages. Beg for government handouts.

Build a proud and independent employed workforce? of people who can work, support themselves, afford to live their own lives by their own choices?

Bugger that for a pathetic humanitarian budget.
