now pay me

In just one brief headline The West has captured the spirit of Australian politics. "WA has delivered so now it is time to repay the favor".
Bugger the national interest. Bugger the world threat of climate change. Bugger the call for racial religious and gender equality.
Now our vote is in. We -- we -- want to be paid.

May we commemorate

I'm preparing to celebrate -- or at least commemorate -- 21st May.

May 21 is the Universal Australia Day. It will be sixty years since both Blak and Whyt people were allowed to vote in Australia. I'm Whyt and I'm proud to live in a country with universal suffrage. Though I'm still not sure of the wisdom of giving women the vote.

one letter from the truth

the headline tells us biggest rap act on way.
i misread it. my mind added a single letter... i thought it was more politicians on their way to sell themselves.

i had read a letter C in front of the word RAP.

no real choice

the front page of the paper shows how little choice there is in the election. two party leaders tarted up by the same pr company:

same round faces. same smooth grey hair. same trustworthy rounded-rectangle glasses. same honest and open half smile. same white collar over dark jacket.

tarted up to appeal to voters. no policies, just... look at me, I'm so open friendly and honest.

as if.

Federal pork

The WA Premier is using $400 of West Australian money in a carefully timed bid to buy votes for his Federal Labor colleagues. What else is he buying?

Is our Premier buying his way into Labor pre-selection for the next Federal election?

Will he then "improve" democracy by removing Senate weighting which gives WA a fair say in Federal Parliament?

closed mind

Peter Baker complains about the closed captions on the ABC News, Letters 9 May.

When he uses a smart phone he may discover a thing called Voice Recognition: Speak to the phone and it will recognise what you say. Of course the phone has to learn to recognise your particular voice. Closed captioning listens to the newsreader and does its best.

Another thing which Peter may have forgotten since primary school  is "homophone", where two different words sound the same. A real challenge for humans as well as for computers.

Still. The point of communication is to transmit meaning. Peter easily identified the wooden meaning behind carry and marry. The captions are sometimes hilarious. They are better than missing all communication because you are deaf.

When Peter's phone can use context to distinguish between carry and Karri, the phone will be smart enough to write Peter's letters for him.
