jobs or ore

Mark Riley has an opinion on the imminent Federal budget (West, 30 April): It must be all about iron ore rather than jobs.

Forget the recent jobs, jobs and more jobs mantra. Iron ore royalties will raise more than $100 billion. The mantra must be Ore! Ore! Ore!

What he's saying is that jobs are not important. Forget the value of employment. No-one cares about a worker's dignity. A worker's self-sufficiency. A worker's self-worth in providing for themselves.

The real measure of national success is government wealth. More correctly: large corporate income.

Let the workers beg for wages. Beg for government handouts.

Build a proud and independent employed workforce? of people who can work, support themselves, afford to live their own lives by their own choices?

Bugger that for a pathetic humanitarian budget.

Age-limited

Ben Harvey must be feeling the pressure of age. He writes in defence of older people still able to work effectively. (Sunday Times, 25 April) I fully agree with him. With one proviso:

Define "effectively".

He gives an example of John Quigley being asked something. Then, in Ben's words, "You will notice that John answered the question without answering the question. He was able to do that because he is a sharp political operator who knows the law inside-out."

So Ben is happy to have a sharp political operator who disguises his lack of having an answer by speaking in bluffy bullshit. Does Quigley have any effective answers, or is he effectively a bullshitter.

I have no idea how good Quigley really is. Except when it comes to not answering. Perhaps we really need a younger attorney General. One who is actually able to answer the difficult questions. Or at least to have an honest try.

The Best Solution. really?

Vaccinated Australians should be allowed to travel freely overseas and then quarantine at home. These are the wise words of mining billionaire Andrew Forrest.

The wise words of a man who will fly first-class. possibly in a private jet. To return home to a private mansion. With servants to fetch and carry and cook. With his  own swimming pool. Possibly his own indoor gym. With easy access via private jet to his million acres of outdoor backyard.

Yep. Words of wisdom from a man who already lives in his own private world of isolation from reality.

water wars

It's been said that the next wars will be fought over water. Some have already started.

Water is essential for industry, for agriculture, simply for living.

To produce 1kg of hydrogen fuel requires about 3.8 litres of pure, distilled water.

Which rivers will Twiggy and Scotty drain in order to power their gassy dreams of a hydrogen-fuelled economy?

efficient solution

Ambulances are ramping outside our major public hospitals.

We can't get people organised for mass covid inoculations.
Large weddings, funerals and Anzac Day gatherings are banned under covid restrictions. Meanwhile, football stadiums are packed with 25,000 screaming (or booing) fans.

We should ramp those ambulances outside the stadium. While footy fans are queuing to go in -- give each fan a covid jab.

Solve several problems all at once.

There are no republicans

Dirk Botje (Letters 14/4 is worried about the republicans saddling up their war horses. Not to worry, Dirk: there are no republicans.

There are only jealous, frustrated people yearning for personal power. Each has a model which, they believe, gives them the best chance of improving their own position.

There are no "republicans". Just a collection of self-interested anti-monarchists.

CEO standards

It's amazing, the standards a major company expects of its executives.

Santos has just appointed Kevin Gallagher as its CEO (The West, 13 April. Gallagher has accepted the job, with whatever terms and conditions and payments he found to be acceptable. A new "employee, ready to work for the company...

Except that Santos do not trust him. They feel that they have to offer him a bribe. Six million dollars  if he stays to do the job -- which he has already agreed to do.

Is Gallagher a notorious liar? Is he infamous for reneging on agreements? Why must he be bribed to do as he agreed?

It seems that Santos expects very poor standards from their employees. At the highest level, anyway.

Cyclone Seroja

It has to be said. And I'm the insensitive person to say it:

Cyclone Seroja. Another unwanted traveller crossing the ocean from Indonesia, soon to land in WA.

playing games

Young children play a game where one child will point excitedly at nothing, while calling out, Look there! look over there! Other, sillier children may look over there. When they look back they find that the first child has eaten the last piece of cake.

Today I watched our Premier and Health Minister on TV. They were pointing excitedly at the back of the room. They were calling out, Look! we still need to fear covid! Look! we have new rules for hotel management! Look . Look! From tomorrow we will do all sorts of new and exciting things!

I wonder how many of our sillier children made the mistake of looking away. Looking away from the real and ongoing crisis at our children's hospital.

Silly children.
