Once again our state government has demonstrated its contempt for its senior citizens.

How can we expect silly old buggers to change the habits of a lifetime. Lockdowns, phone calls and Zoom meetings are far too difficult for our less able citizens.

No wonder Wesfarmers managers are moving East. We can't expect those antique brains to change. Giving orders is easy. Working with new technology is for young people. We cannot expect old directors to adapt.

Normal practice is for them to use their power and influence to force everyone else to change. But when that fails... they can use their money to run away.

a Day for everyone

Part 1:

I can understand Blak objections to January 26th as Australia Day. We need a day on which both Blak and Whyt Australians can be pleased and proud.

21st May 1962 is the day on which Blak and Whyt Australians were joined in the right to vote. We can all -- Blak and Whyt -- be proud of that day. It was a major step towards our current democracy.

Celebrate Australia Day on 21st May each year.

Celebrate together.

That date is far too close to all the other holidays in the first half of the year.

Who cares, as long as it is still a holiday.

Come on! New Zealand were way ahead of us with Blak votes.

Typical... Once more, gaining votes for women is relegated to the bin of unimportant trivia.

It's all too hard... Let's leave it for another year.

Democracy in action

In Tuesday's Editorial De Ceglie asks, when did the popular decision morph into becoming the right decision?

Simple, really. It happened when Australia chose to become a democracy.

Democracy results in decisions that are wanted by -- popular with -- the majority. Whether or not power-brokers believe that they are "right". We voted. Now we get the decisions that we deserve.

one small change

Margaret Ryan (Letters 7 Jan) regularly does one small thing to help to preserve our natural environment. It's one very small action. It suits her lifestyle. It costs her no more than a few moments each time. The possibility of one action saving the life of an animal is tiny. But yes, it is possible.

What can we each do to help? What small action can I choose to take?

Imagine millions of people, each making one small but regular change.

Like the pebbles which start an avalanche, we may save the planet.

a sacking offence

This really needs to be fact-checked but: I seem to remember a rather old photo in The West showing Ms Spasojevic posing with a group of politicians. She is the attractive young blonde woman brightening a photo of boring male politicians.

After many years of hard work, Ms Spasojevic is now an older woman.

Surely getting older is reason enough to sack any woman.

The Arts Minister says that the musical Grease reflected the different attitudes of the 1950s and 1970s.

When the movie was released -- in the 1970s -- it was satirised in Mad Magazine. The magazine was able to identify the key message: To catch a boy a girl needs to dress like a slut.

The message is wrapped in cheerful song-and-dance numbers to hide the insult to women.

Come the 2020s and attitudes have not changed. There are still some people who can see past the colourful bubble-gum wrapping to the show's demeaning attitude to women's role in society.
