CEO standards

It's amazing, the standards a major company expects of its executives.

Santos has just appointed Kevin Gallagher as its CEO (The West, 13 April. Gallagher has accepted the job, with whatever terms and conditions and payments he found to be acceptable. A new "employee, ready to work for the company...

Except that Santos do not trust him. They feel that they have to offer him a bribe. Six million dollars  if he stays to do the job -- which he has already agreed to do.

Is Gallagher a notorious liar? Is he infamous for reneging on agreements? Why must he be bribed to do as he agreed?

It seems that Santos expects very poor standards from their employees. At the highest level, anyway.

playing games

Young children play a game where one child will point excitedly at nothing, while calling out, Look there! look over there! Other, sillier children may look over there. When they look back they find that the first child has eaten the last piece of cake.

Today I watched our Premier and Health Minister on TV. They were pointing excitedly at the back of the room. They were calling out, Look! we still need to fear covid! Look! we have new rules for hotel management! Look . Look! From tomorrow we will do all sorts of new and exciting things!

I wonder how many of our sillier children made the mistake of looking away. Looking away from the real and ongoing crisis at our children's hospital.

Silly children.

Pork Barrel Plus

I agree with Ron Elliot (Letters 10/3), the constant pork barrel bidding war is annoying and confusing.

I like to keep my bribes simple: whatever is offered by another candidate, I offer the same -- plus ten percent.

Just as well I'm not running against the Sex Party. My plus-ten-percent offer might not stand up to scrutiny.

Election choices

In this apparently one-sided election voters should not be afraid to vote for a minor party. These small parties offer more than their obvious single issue.

The Legalise Cannabis WA Party, for example, has only one policy, to legalise cannabis in WA. Yet their candidates offer much more.

In Warren-Blackwood the LCWA candidate supports the one policy. He also offers a broad set of skills, knowledge and experience. To be practical he also offers support for anything offered by other major candidates -- plus ten percent.

Voters can support the single issue of a minor party and still get an active member of parliament with a deep pork barrel.

Mysterious ways

Recent letters to the paper have discussed the effect of prayer. I would be happy to be proven wrong but, I don't believe that there is a god. So I don't pray.

There are some people who tell me that they pray for me. I don't expect that prayer will cure my cancer. Yet I am grateful for the warmth of feeling of the people who pray.

Prayer is a sign that you care. Believe it or not, you can pray. Remember to also keep an eye out for Sheila Pryce's boat and helicopter.
